Why Yarn Weight Matters
Choosing the right yarn weight is one of the most important decisions you'll make for any knitting or crochet project. Get it right and your finished piece will drape, fit, and feel exactly as intended. Get it wrong and even a beautifully executed stitch pattern can fall flat.
In this guide, we'll walk you through the standard yarn weight categories, what each one is best suited for, and how to match weight to your project — plus our top yarn picks for each.
The Standard Yarn Weight System
The Craft Yarn Council defines seven standard yarn weights, numbered 0 through 7. Here's a quick overview:
- 0 – Lace: Very fine thread, used for delicate shawls and doilies. Typically knit on 1.5–2.25 mm needles.
- 1 – Super Fine (Fingering/Sock): Great for socks, lightweight shawls, and baby items. Needles: 2.25–3.25 mm.
- 2 – Fine (Sport): A step up from fingering — good for baby garments and light accessories. Needles: 3.25–3.75 mm.
- 3 – Light (DK): One of the most versatile weights. Works beautifully for garments, hats, and baby projects. Needles: 3.75–4.5 mm.
- 4 – Medium (Worsted/Aran): The most popular weight for a reason — fast to knit, widely available, and suitable for almost everything. Needles: 4.5–5.5 mm (worsted) or 5–6 mm (aran).
- 5 – Bulky: Quick projects like cowls, hats, and blankets. Needles: 6–8 mm.
- 6 – Super Bulky: Very fast knitting, great for chunky home décor and scarves. Needles: 8–12.75 mm.
- 7 – Jumbo: Arm knitting and extreme chunky projects. Needles: 12.75 mm and up.
Matching Yarn Weight to Your Project
Garments (Sweaters, Cardigans, Tops)
For adult garments, DK and worsted weights are the sweet spot. They knit up at a reasonable pace while still producing a fabric with good drape and stitch definition. Aran weight is ideal if you want a cozy, structured fabric — perfect for cables.

How to Read the Yarn Label
Yarn labels will tell you the recommended needle/hook size, and gauge. From that you'll be able to figure out the yarn weight if it's not alraedy on the label. Look for the skein of yarn symbol on the label: it shows the recommended needle size in mm and US sizes. The gauge information (usually given as stitches and rows per 10 cm or 4 inches) is your most reliable guide to whether a yarn will work for your pattern.
What If You Want to Substitute a Yarn?
Yarn substitution is one of the most common questions we get. The golden rule: match the gauge, not just the weight category. Two worsted-weight yarns can have very different gauges depending on the fibre content and how the yarn is spun.
When substituting, always make a gauge swatch with your chosen yarn and tools before starting the pattern. It only takes a little bit of time and can save hours of frustration.
